Seraphinite is the name of one out of more than a dozen known varieties of the mineral clinochlore. It is characterized by its radial or plumose structure.
Origin of name: from its feathery structure which sometimes resembles (angel?) wings
Synonyms and trade names: chlorite jade
Can be confused with: other similarly coloured and patterned minerals like nephrite, actinolite or antophyllite
Localities: whereas worldwide almost three thousand deposits of clinochlore are known, there is only one location for seraphinite, the Korshunovskoye iron deposit, Zheleznogorsk-Ilimsky, Nizhneilimsky district, Irkutsk Oblast, Sibiria, Russia
Handling: seraphinite is attractive but it is also very soft, perfectly cleavable and very sensitive towards acids. Handle and wear with great care!
