A rare ornamental stone composed of a fossilised, rugose coral, Hexagonaria Percarinata, extinct since the Devonian, about 350 million years ago.
Origin of name: named after the only source, the city of Petoskey, on the shore of Lake Michigan
Petoskey itself is named after former Odawa [Ottawa] Chief Petosegay, son of Antoine Carree, French nobleman and fur trader, and his wife, daughter of an Odawa chief. The name means "rising sun".
